According to Article 40 of Saudi Labor law, the employer is responsible for paying iqama issuance, renewal, and work permit fees. So, technically it’s not your responsibility to pay these fees.
However, it’s quite handy to understand them so that you know what is happening and why there is a delay in the renewal of your iqama.
Check Iqama Fees
Basically, there are three types of iqama fees;
- Iqama renewal fee
- Maktab amal fee
- Dependent levy (if applicable)
The resident permit (iqama) can’t be issued or renewed until all the fees and fines(if applicable) are paid.
Iqama Issuance And Renewal Fee
The iqama issuance and renewal fee is 650 Saudi Riyals per year. However, According to the new rules the fee can be paid quarterly, half-yearly, or every 3 quarters of the year.
- Iqama Fee for 3 months: SAR 163
- Iqama Fee for 6 months: SAR 325
- Iqama Fee for 9 months: SAR 488
- Iqama Fee for 1 year: SAR 650
- Wife’s Iqama Fee: 500 Saudi Riyals per year
Maktab Amal Fee (Work Permit Fee)
The maktab amal allows expatriate workers to legally work in KSA by charging a levy or fee for issuing the work permit. The labor law obliges employers to pay the work permit fee for their employees.
The levy must be paid at the time of issuance or renewal of iqama and, the fee amount changes depending on the number of Saudi citizens working in any company.
The work permit fee per expat is 700 Saudi Riyals per month if a company has 50% or more Saudi nationals working. However, it increases to 800 Saudi Riyals per month for each resident worker if the number of Saudis is less than 50% working in that organization.
The employer will pay it along with the iqama issuance or renewal fee in the quarterly, half-yearly, or full-year fee.
For Small Companies (Up to 9 Workers)
If a company consists of 9 or fewer employees, including a Saudi national, there is an exemption from fees for up to 2 expatriate workers. Upon hiring an additional Saudi citizen, the exemption in work permit fees will be up to 4 resident employees.
This law will be in effect till March 2024.
For companies having 50% or more Saudi national workforce
- 3-Months Fee: 2100 Riyals
- 6-Months Fee: 4200 Riyals
- 9-Months Fee: 6300 Riyals
- Yearly Fee: 8400 Riyals
For organizations hiring less than 50% Saudi citizens
- 3-Months Fee: 2400 Riyals
- 6-Months Fee: 4800 Riyals
- 9-Months Fee: 7200 Riyals
- Yearly Fee: 9600 Riyals
Maktab Amal Fee For Domestic Workers
Maktab amal has imposed the work permit fee on House Drivers (Saiq Khas), maids, farmers، heders and implemented it on 22 May 2022.
However, if the employer is a Saudi national, he will be exempted for the first four employees, while the fee will have to be paid for the fifth employee.
Similarly, an expat employer has to pay maktab amal fee for the third domestic employee as there is an exemption for the first two workers.
- Maktab amal levy for a domestic worker: SAR 9600 per year

Dependent Levy
The dependent levy in Saudi Arabia is a fee imposed on expatriate workers for each dependent (e.g., spouse, children) living with them as a resident. 400 Riyals per month is the dependent fee for each family member.
The dependent fee structure would be as follows if you calculate every quarter.
- Monthly fee per dependent: 400 Riyals
- Quarterly fee per dependent: 1200 Riyals
- Half-yearly fee per dependent: 2400 Riyals
- Yearly fee per dependent: 4800 Riyals
Health Insurance Fee
health insurance is another condition for renewing the resident’s iqama. MOI (Ministry of Interior) ensures that every expat has valid health insurance. Although it is not an iqama fee but a pre-requisite in issuing an iqama.
The iqama insurance costs according to its categories, the provider company, and the facilities the expat is getting. But overall, according to an estimate, it can be bought for 600-700 riyals.

Iqama Fees Payment Status
A delay in paying the iqama fees results in a delay in the iqama renewal process. Therefore, you should keep an eye on the fees paid or not.

What is the method or exact method to renew iqama
Please help for this process..

Well, it seems that the problem lies on the jawazat side. As you know according to the rules, kafeel or the comapany is responsible for the renewal process and the employer has very little to control it. So it would be better to ask them to resolve the issue as soon as possible. In addition to that, check all the payable fees if paid or not to confirm that the company is not the reason in the delay of iqama renewal.
